It entered American horticulture in 1798 when Colonel John Stevens imported a cultivated variety known as "Dark Purple" from England. Chrysanthemums are divided into two basic groups, garden hardy and exhibition. They are native to East Asia and northeastern Europe and countless horticultural varieties and cultivars exist. Their flowers occur in various forms, and can be daisy-like or decorative, like pompons or buttons.
