Photo-voltaic modules, or solar panels how they're colloquially known, use sunlight as a source of energy and generate electricity. This types of panels are usually grouped in large arrays that generate renewable energy for a piece of equipment, a house, a building or factory or event larger area like neighborhoods or cities. Most modules use wafer-based crystalline silicon cells or thin-film cells and generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect(the generation of voltage and electric current in a material upon exposure to light) when the Sun shines on them. Currently, the best achieved sunlight conversion rate (solar module efficiency) is around 21.5%.
